One of the many reasons I love our Tag a Towels is that they help my family conserve. By knowing which hanging towel is ours, we can be comfortable knowing that we’re reusing our own towels.

When we didn’t have the Tag a Towel system in place, no matter how good we were at hanging our towels after a shower or bath, come the next shower we forgot which white towel was ours. So we grabbed another one, and so grew my laundry pile (and my frustration!).

The four letters no mom wants to hear…M.R.S.A.

When I first thought of Tag a Towels it was something to make my life easier. I wanted a simple way to tell my husband which towel was mine so that he wouldn’t steal it anymore. I was sick of always using a new towel because I wasn’t sure which hanging white towel was mine. The laundry was out of control and I couldn’t wash towels fast enough to keep up with our excessive towel use.

So I designed Tag a Towels and started on my path to find out just what it takes to bring a product to market.

Four letters no mom wants to hear…M.R.S.A.

One year later and my daughter woke up one morning with a sore on her bottom. She had been having a rash but what was previously a little red was now a mean, aggressive looking sore. I took her to the doctors first thing and found out that it was a staph infection she had likely gotten from a recent trip to the beach. As if that wasn’t scary enough, the doctor feared it was MRSA with how fast it was growing. (It had doubled in size over night.)

The physician said they needed to do minor surgery right away to drain the infection out. She immediately put in a call and found that the surgeon was in the building and could do an impromptu minor surgery on my one year old daughter. It was a whirlwind and it happened fast. I had to help calm her down as she screamed in terror with a “what is going on?” look in her eye. It broke my heart. It scared me.

We had to have another minor surgery one week later after they felt the infection wasn’t going away fast enough, even with her on aggressive antibiotics. Oh and this time they had officially determined that she had MRSA.

Through all my research on MRSA I found that sharing towels is one of the top ways the disease is shared. And here’s the thing. You may not have a sore or be on antibiotics or even know that you have MRSA on your skin, but tons and tons of people are “colonized with staph.” They live with it and have no symptoms.

It was while I was running our towels though a bleach cycle and cleaning our bathroom, that I realized now just how important bringing my idea, Tag a Towels to market really was. They were no longer just a tool to help me with cutting down on laundry or saving my marriage from towel takings. Now, Tag a Towels were a necessity. We needed them to make sure that our family was kept safe.

“Keep your cooties to yourself”

(That’s our famous tag line. It usually gets a chuckle.)

In the most simplest of terms (hey, I’m no doctor!), we all have “cooties” but those cooties are our own. Our bodies have different antibodies capable of doing different stuff. So while you may be cool with your cooties, if I catch them I may not be used to them and they could turn into an infection.

With Tag a Towels you can still do your part in conserving by reusing your towel but you can do it safely while keeping your cooties to yourself.

Update on my little one

My daughter did have a few recurrences of MRSA. That’s another bummer about this disease, once you get it, you have it and it can pop up again more easily. So it’s really important to stay clean and do your best not to share cooties. She’s now just shy of four and is doing great. Her last occurrence was so long ago that I can’t remember the date!
